Craftsman Battery Hack.

Craftsman Drill battery

I thought this was a great solution to battery problems and wanted to share this with everyone on the site. The Credit goes to Cory at his blog http://staff.osuosl.org/~cshields/?p=147

This weekend I spent a lot of time working on my MAME cabinet. In the control panel, each button and joystick needed a 1 1/8″ hole drilled. This meant 20 holes in my configuration. With my handy Craftsman battery powered drill and 2 fully charged batteries I went to work. I was only able to drill 3 holes per battery. (this is 3/4″ MDF, strong stuff.. gotta drill about a few millimeters at a time and clean out the hole and teeth before going further)

I put out a few calls to friends looking for a corded drill to finish the job. Being impatient, I got tired of waiting for that solution. Sitting at my computer I glanced at the 12volt 50 amp-hour gel cell battery that I have my amateur radio gear hooked up through. It is a little bigger than a car battery.

I tested the leads on the drill battery to find which was positive, then hooked up a couple of male wire connectors that would fit into the slots of the drill.

I was able to drill the remaining 14 holes with no problem. Mounted the joysticks while the drill was still hooked up, as well as some other odds and ends around the cabinet. Hooked the battery back up to the radio gear, everything still runs fine.
